Those icy-blue eyes are fixed on the sand. Gone is the relaxed, charming Carter I normally see. He’s been much more reserved and almost tender tonight, as if he’s trying to put me at ease.

Now is my moment. I just need to do it.

When I take a step toward him, his head shoots up, and his gaze falls to my mouth.

“I want to kiss you,” I say.

He stares at me for a long moment. What is that expression? I’ve never seen it before. “Okay,” he eventually says.

I press up to my toes and set my lips against his. Even in the chilly air, they’re deliciously warm. At first, he only pouts his lip while I nibble at them, but when I slip my tongue into his mouth, he grabs me by the waist and yanks me against him. His strong grip cuts into my skin, but his kiss is soft.

When he finally pulls away, we’re both breathless. We stare at each other. “I’ve never wanted anyone this much,” he says.

I can trust that he means it, and the thought sends a tingling thrill up my spine. This is the advantage of choosing someone so brutally—sometimes painfully—honest. Those words would be a line coming from anyone else.

I’m going to do this. What a magical way to lose my virginity, on the sand of a private beach. If I pass this moment up, I’ll always regret it. I can do this.

I can have meaningless sex and enjoy it.

Even if I can’t enjoy it. Even if the shame comes back, this will be a good first step.

My gaze runs over his tall, hulking form. This is so different than I imagined my first time would be like all those years ago. I thought it would be with my husband. I thought it would be in the bed, and he would be the initiator.

Look how far I’ve come.

When I reach for the waistband of his jeans, his eyebrows shoot up his forehead. “Whoa there, baby,” he says breathlessly.

My stomach sinks. God, how awkward. I look away and tuck a strand of hair behind my ears.

“Hey.” His voice is gentle. “It’s okay. I liked it.”

His hand settles on my cheek and drifts down to my nape, calming my jittering nerves. I return my hands to his jeans, keeping my gaze fixed on his hips. I fumble with the button, so he lowers his hand and helps me. After I unzip them, I set my hands at my side. I’m not quite ready to pull his pants down.

“Are you sure you want to start this party out here?” he asks. “It’s probably not going to live up to your fantasy. You’re going to find sand in unspeakable places for the next month. No joke.”

I chuckle, though my voice is a little tight. He must sense my jitters, because his smile fades. After setting both hands on my cheeks, he presses a kiss on my mouth. “You don’t have to be nervous with me. Everything you do makes me happy.
